Diagnosing Curriculum from the Consumer Perspective… Strengthening Data-Driven Improvement Structures

Hoseo University is advancing its educational improvement system through a student-participatory curriculum monitoring program. The university held a completion ceremony for the ‘7th Hoseo Supporters,’ a curriculum monitoring group, at both its Cheonan and Asan campuses to share the achievements of student-based educational enhancement activities.

Launched in 2019, the Hoseo Supporters is a student-led inspection system where students—the primary consumers of education—directly review major and liberal arts courses as well as general learning infrastructure to provide feedback for improvement. In its 7th term, 104 students selected from 56 departments participated in monitoring activities across the entire regular curriculum.

During the completion ceremony, students were presented with certificates, and the university shared the results of its review of student requests and future plans for implementation. A key feature of the program is its transparency; rather than simply collecting opinions, the university publicly explains how student suggestions are reviewed and utilized during the institutional improvement process. Additionally, the ‘Hoseo Supporters Award’ was presented to students who excelled in promoting the program on campus.

From Simple Satisfaction Surveys to Systematic Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis

To increase the effectiveness of the supporters’ system, Hoseo University has refined survey questions for each curriculum and expanded its sample size. This has allowed for a reorganized data structure that enables year-over-year and course-by-course comparisons, establishing a systematic analytical foundation that goes beyond one-dimensional satisfaction surveys.

Quantitative research is conducted in tandem with qualitative analysis. The university performs Focus Group Interviews (FGI), categorized by students and academic committee members, to supplement survey results and enhance the reliability and objectivity of the responses. The feedback collected through these channels is actively utilized in discussions regarding actual curriculum reorganization and learning environment improvements.

A Vision for Sophisticated Educational Quality Management

Hoseo University plans to gradually promote student-centered curriculum design and learning environment improvements based on the accumulated data from the Hoseo Supporters’ activities. The vision is to evolve the educational quality management method into a more sophisticated system through a monitoring structure that institutionalizes student participation.

Kim Kye-won, Director of the Educational Performance Management Center, stated, “Student-participatory monitoring is leading to practical improvements centered on the educational field. We will continue to inspect and systematically improve the curriculum from the perspective of our educational consumers.”
