Accelerating Transition to a Defense-Specialized University through Joint Research, AI-Convergence Education, and Infrastructure Sharing

Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) is accelerating the innovation of the regional defense industry by establishing a large-scale cooperation system with defense venture companies in the Jeonbuk region. JBNU announced that it has signed a business agreement with 35 partner companies of the Jeonbuk Defense Venture Center to initiate joint research, technology development, and the establishment of an industry-university cooperation platform in the defense and security sector.

This agreement aligns with JBNU’s strategic transition into a defense-specialized research university. The university aims to advance its research and education system by strengthening core future technology capabilities and AI-based educational innovation, ultimately connecting these efforts to the regional defense industry ecosystem. JBNU expects this collaboration to serve as a turning point for the local defense industry to leap to the next level.

Key Areas of Cooperation: From AI Education to R&D Infrastructure

According to the agreement, JBNU and the participating companies will pursue joint R&D and build an industry-university cooperation platform. Specific plans include:

  • AI-Convergence Education: Developing and operating AI-integrated training programs tailored to corporate needs to cultivate professional talent ready for immediate field deployment.
  • Future Core Technology R&D: Planning convergence-type research and development projects centered on future key technologies in the defense sector.
  • Infrastructure Sharing: Expanding the joint use of testing and analysis equipment and research facilities to support efficient R&D for local companies.

This approach is designed to lower the technological development burden on small and medium-sized ventures while promoting the accumulation and diffusion of technology within the region.

Building a Sustainable Defense Ecosystem

The agreement also emphasizes talent cultivation and its link to employment and entrepreneurship. Participating companies will have at least one employee participate in Defense Project Manager (DPM) training annually to enhance professionalism. JBNU plans to foster an ecosystem that links this specialized training with the qualitative growth of the regional defense industry.

JBNU views this partnership as more than just simple industry-academic cooperation; it is an expansion of the Flagship National University model, contributing to regional innovation and balanced national development. By strengthening ties with local businesses through shared infrastructure and joint research, the university intends to structurally redefine its role in the defense sector.

Yang Oh-bong, President of Jeonbuk National University, stated that through this agreement, the university will share its research and educational capabilities with local companies to build a defense innovation ecosystem, thereby enhancing the future competitiveness of the Jeonbuk region.
