10 Years of LMO Research Facility Operation: Establishing Research Safety as the Foundation for Research Excellence
As life science research becomes increasingly sophisticated, the importance of research safety and management systems grows in tandem. Against this backdrop, Professor Kim Seong-jo of the Department of Biotechnology at Hoseo University has been awarded a commendation from the Minister of Science and ICT in recognition of his contributions to the field of biological research resource safety management.
Professor Kim received the commendation at the 4th Multi-Department Biological Research Resource Performance Exchange Meeting held at the Daejeon Convention Center(DCC). This event was organized to share research achievements in AI and bio-sectors and discuss cooperation directions for the management and utilization of biological research resources, with 29 government departments participating, including the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment.
Professor Kim Seong-jo has operated Living Modified Organism(LMO) research facilities for over 10 years, contributing to the establishment of laboratory safety management systems and the spread of a field-oriented safety culture. Serving as an expert reviewer for Living Modified Organisms at the National Research Safety Management Center, he has participated in on-site inspections of research facilities and consistently contributed to producing educational content to spread LMO safety awareness.
These activities focus on establishing research safety not as a mere administrative procedure but as an essential condition for research. He has been evaluated for providing a foundation where researchers can focus on their work in a more stable environment through a system that pre-inspected and managed risk factors that may occur during the research process.
Parallel Success in Research: From New Drug Development to Biomaterials
Alongside his safety management activities, Professor Kim Seong-jo has conducted life science research focused on the development of new drugs and biomaterials. Through research on rare and metabolic diseases, he has performed tasks such as discovering drug candidates, identifying indications, and analyzing the pathogenic mechanisms of pediatric dementia and neurodegenerative diseases. His research also spans metabolic diseases in both humans and companion animals.
These research results are leading to the development of biomaterial-based treatments. Taking this commendation as an opportunity, Professor Kim stated that he would more systematically perform risk factor analysis and prevention activities in the research process, alongside the development of advanced biotechnology research techniques. He emphasized that research performance and safety management are not separate domains but elements that must develop together.
Hoseo University also views laboratory safety as a core element of research competitiveness and is continuously promoting the advancement of safety systems, strengthening education, and spreading a safety culture. This award is interpreted as an instance where the university-level research safety management system has been evaluated positively by external authorities.
