Demonstrating Technology to Counter Surge in Space Debris… Enhancing the Feasibility of Active Debris Removal (ADR)

The research team led by Professor Cho Hae-seong from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) College of Engineering has received the Best Paper Award from the Korean Society for Noise and Vibration Engineering (KSNVE) for proposing a core technology to address the growing issue of space debris.

The award-winning research was recognized for its academic and technical excellence in designing, manufacturing, and experimentally verifying an Ejection Mechanism for a technology that captures space objects using nets.

Bridging the Gap in Active Debris Removal (ADR)

As space exploration accelerates, the problem of space junk threatening the operation of satellites and spacecraft has become a major international challenge. Professor Cho’s team has provided a practical technological solution applicable to Active Debris Removal (ADR).

The team directly designed and manufactured an ejection device to implement net-based capture technology. Through repeated experiments, they systematically verified the reliability and performance of the mechanism. The study received high praise for moving beyond a simple conceptual proposal and proving actual operational feasibility through experimentation.

Transitioning to Engineering Implementation

This research is evaluated as a case demonstrating that space debris removal technology has moved past the level of theoretical discussion into an engineering phase ready for actual missions.

Professor Cho emphasized that in the era of New Space, creating a sustainable space environment has become a national task. He noted that the active participation of graduate students was the foundation of this achievement and expressed his commitment to continuing follow-up research to secure South Korea’s space security and future technological competitiveness.

Following the momentum of South Korea’s space development—symbolized by the success of the Nuri rocket’s 4th launch—there are high expectations that space debris removal technology will become a key element in strengthening national space capabilities.
