Writing Education Combined with AI Composition System… Expanding Experiences and Emotions into Music
Dongshin University Academic Culture and Information Center is gaining attention for operating a ‘Lyricist Debut Project’ that expands students’ writing competence into music creation. The project was planned as part of the ‘Easy Writing Class’ program, with K-POP lyricist Heo Jun-hee participating to guide students through lyric theory and practical creation processes. Sixteen enrolled students participated in the program, systematically experiencing the lyricist debut process over the course of a month.
Participating students learned to understand the basic structure of K-POP songwriting, known as song form, and methods for setting themes. They then drafted lyrics based on their personal experiences and emotions. Through repetitive feedback and detailed coaching, they completed their lyrics, mastering how to express their inner thoughts and feelings in concrete language. This process was evaluated as an education that went beyond simple writing training to simultaneously foster self-reflection and expressive ability.
The completed lyrics were produced into individual sound sources using the AI composition system ‘SUNO AI.’ Students learned how to write prompts and selected melodies that matched their lyrics, generating sound sources in various styles. This provided an in-depth experience of the AI-based music production process. Through this, they realized that technology is not a tool that replaces creation but a means to broaden the scope of expression.
The project resulted in a total of 16 completed songs, including “Youth,” “Star Rain (별비),” “Winter Night,” “Soft Dream,” “Just a Casual Relationship (그냥그런사이),” and “Blue Spot (푸른점),” all finished as works containing personal stories.
To share the project results with its members, the Academic Culture and Information Center operated a lyric exhibition and a sound source listening space. Furthermore, it enhanced the participants’ sense of achievement by selecting and awarding 6 popular works based on online voting and YouTube views.
Kim Hae-ri, a student in Oriental Medicine who participated in the program, shared her reflection that while AI completed the music track, the process made her contemplate the fundamental competence of a lyricist. She realized that writing starts with a human story before technology.
Heo Yong-moo, Director of the Academic Culture and Information Center, expressed his hope that this project would serve as an opportunity for students to strengthen their inner selves by expressing their thoughts through writing and music. He also announced plans to continue operating various programs that can cultivate writing and speaking competencies and humanistic literacy.
Through this Lyricist Debut Project, Dongshin University has demonstrated the potential for expansion when writing education is combined with culture and technology, presenting a new model for student-centered creative education.
