Developing Korean Language Textbooks Optimized for KSL Users… Bridging the Gap in Bilingual Education

The Language Convergence Research Institute at Chosun University (CU) is receiving high praise for its efforts to improve the educational environment for Deaf Students. The institute has recently launched a project to develop specialized Korean Language Textbooks that incorporate Bilingual Education strategies, utilizing both Korean Sign Language (KSL) and written Korean to enhance literacy and communication skills.

Strengthening Literacy through Korean Sign Language (KSL)

For many deaf students, KSL is their first language, making the standard Korean curriculum challenging to follow. The research team at Chosun University is focusing on a “Bilingual-Bicultural” approach. By treating KSL and written Korean as two distinct but complementary languages, the new materials help students understand complex grammatical structures and vocabulary through visual and linguistic cues tailored to their needs.

A Vision for Inclusive Education

This initiative is part of Chosun University’s broader commitment to Inclusive Education. By creating accessible learning resources, the institute aims to ensure that deaf students have equal opportunities for academic success and social integration.

“Education should not have barriers. Our goal is to provide deaf students with the tools they need to master the Korean language while respecting their identity as KSL users,” said a representative from the Language Convergence Research Institute. “We hope our textbooks will serve as a cornerstone for a more inclusive society.”
